Install a programmable thermostat and get rid of your old inefficient one.

It will allow you to have the temperature set at the most efficient setting while you are tucked away in your covers at night time, or away from your house during the day.

Where possible, switch to fluorescent lights where you can. They are capable of producing about 4 times as much light per watt as incandescent lights and last longer, which will provide you overall with savings.

Why should you heat or cool the outdoors? A few summer tips:

Weatherstrip doors and windows.

Incandescent lights produce heat which in turn has to be removed from the house. Turn them off when you do not need to use them.

Save a little more energy by using low wattage light bulbs in hallways, once again reucing the amount of heat that has to be removed.
